My mother was a PhD research pathologist, my father a successful attorney. On paper they’re smart. But they both severely lack basic interpersonal and emotional skills, they divide the world into Us vs Them, they consistently make terrible choices with money, their advice for their children is counter-intuitive (and often destructive), they relegate all cultural experiences to towards their religion, and they have no appreciation for quality. Mom reads magazines, Dad reads spy novels.
